Happy Yulidays to All
by Euraid

Brightest Blessings one and all as we take a deep breath and dive head first into the Silly Season. This is the time of a paradoxical time of year when it’s easy to lose your faith but it’s also very easy to reaffirm it.

Before I started this article I asked my son if he’d like to help. For once, he was stuck for words. To help I asked what his favorite part of the whole season was. I was very surprised by his answer. “The tree. The best part is putting up the tree.” he said. Not presents or cookies or anything else, the tree was the best part of the season for him.

Yule treeA little while later as I was helping him pick his clothes out he turned to me and said quite seriously, “You know, mom, everything comes from the Goddess. Everything. Isn’t that cool!” Now my son says amazing things like this all the time so without missing a beat I went on to describe the web that connected everything to the Goddess from Mommy and Daddy and Brody to our dogs and fish to the carpet and even the tree. He giggles every time he thinks I’ve said something silly so I explain how everything comes from something living, even the carpet fibers made from petroleum which is made from dinosaurs. Nothing blows a kids mind more than linking things to dinosaurs, trust me.

Now I admit that during this season I lose sight of the daily lessons in my faith for my son but after a little thought I have come up with some simple ideas that will help sneak some background into the season.

First let’s start with the lights, everyone loves lights. This is a festival of light after all. The goddess gives birth to the God and he brings light back to the dark world. Tonight, I’ll let my son turn on the lights. I’ll explain how he can take part in pushing back the darkness. Maybe we’ll add a little drumming to build the excitement.

Next we have the tree. There are so many stories about the history of the tree I’ll just keep it simple. Let us bring nature into our home to celebrate with us. Maybe let him come up with a story about why we use a tree.

Cookies! Step three. There is no greater celebration of abundance than cookies, and I’m not just talking about my bottom and thighs. Make cookies in the shapes of oak and holly leaves and suns. Explain why we use these symbols while you dunk them in a glass of yummy milk (Goddess reference). I guarantee that any lessons wrapped up in a joyous memory will not be forgotten.

On Yule, throw a noise party. Wake up the sun and invite him back to our lives. Let your children laugh and sing and bang drums or pots and pans, anything that is pure joy. Remind your child how important it is to turn on a light instead of curing the darkness. But most importantly have fun.

When you come to the bottom of it all, we need to remember that faith should be a celebration. Life has too many chances to get hung up on the darkness. Celebrate the light and let the sunshine in.

Brightest Blessing to all in this joyous season!
